Why Organic Waste Matters

Organic waste is often treated as a disposal problem. However, when properly separated and managed, it can also become an input for another biological process. This is where source separation becomes important. Organic waste should be separated from materials such as plastic, chemicals, and other contaminants before it enters a biological processing system. For a circular system to work, the quality of the input matters. A simple system can start with something as basic as:

From Organic Waste to BSF

One way to transform suitable organic waste is through Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae. BSF larvae, commonly called maggots, can consume suitable organic materials and convert part of that material into insect biomass. The basic process is:

Organic Waste → BSF Larvae → Insect Biomass + Frass

The larvae become a source of insect protein and other nutrients, while the remaining material can have agricultural value when properly managed. This is one of the reasons BSF in Bali has potential beyond waste management. It creates a connection between two systems that are usually treated separately:

From Maggot to Feed

The next step is where waste begins to reconnect with agriculture. BSF larvae can be processed into different forms, depending on their intended application. These can include fresh maggot, dried maggot, and maggot powder. These products can be explored as alternative feed ingredients for appropriate livestock and aquaculture applications. This does not mean that maggot should automatically replace conventional feed. Animal nutrition still requires a balanced combination of protein, energy, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. Instead, the opportunity lies in using BSF as part of a broader feed strategy.

A resource that was once considered waste has now entered another stage of the food system.

From Feed to Farm

But the circular journey does not stop at animal feed. Feed supports animals. Animals support food production. And farms produce food that can eventually return to households, restaurants, hotels, and communities. The cycle becomes:
